Traumatic Brain Injury, a modern rehab approach

Introduction
Brain injury after trauma can be unpredictable and unstable. It has many different symtoms depending on the location of trauma. Much is asked of therapeutic assessment and intervention. In this course, we will focus on motor rehabilitation and motor functioning in daily life. We will provide various forms of functional assessment and training especially suited for these patients. We will use assessment tools and methods to provide the participants with the best available knowledge and skills to work with these patients. Robotic training, serious gaming, virtual and augmented reality are part of these tools.

Goals
After following this course you:
  • Know the general principles of physiotherapy or motor rehabilitation after Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI);
  • Are able to indentify motor inpairment and functional loss with TBI;
  • You can select relevant assessment tools and perform an assessment;
  • You can conclude your assessment with a diagnosis to work with;
  • You can make a treatment plan with short term and long term goals;
  • You can select your goals in correspondence tot the ICF and place these in a RPS form;
  • You can demonstrate assessment and treatment skills with a given case with focus on funtional recovery;

Program
Day 1
The first day we will discuss general principles of rehabilitation. We will identify different disorders and complications of TBI and discuss what to do. We will go in to Motor Learning and its consequences for treatment. Cognitive disfunction and an approach to cognitive rehabilition are discussed. 

Day 2

This day diagnostic skills are the focus. The use of questionnairs en measurement instruments will be discussed. Assessment tools will be practiced. In the second half of the day we practice hands on coaching skills as motivational interviewing to use in motivating the clients. 

Day 3
We will practice hand's on skills for spasticity and moving. We will use treatmill training to train walking and to deminisch complications. We will practice training for the upper extremity and place it in a functional context.  

Preparation

We will send you a study guide with articles and other reading material. You will make a case of one of your patients, film a short video and formulate a clinical question to be answered. 

Certificate
After concluding the course and the preparation, you will recieve a certificat of THIM, University of Applied Sciences
